Shuffle Up Some Fun

We can do no better than to rejoice in God’s gifts and do good for as long as we live. People should feast upon the fruits of their labor, for this is God’s gift.
Ecclesiastes 3:12–13 The Discussion Bible
 Shuffle Up Some Fun

Back when the summers stretched long and wide,
With neighborhood friends all gathered outside,
We’d get a deck of cards with a delightful shout,
And spend the afternoon playing fun games out.

Old Maid would wander from hand to hand,
A dreaded card that none of us had planned.
We’d giggle and groan when she came our way,
Then secretly pass it along without any delay.

In Battle we’d flip cards with a dramatic cry,
Each hoping our turning would rank high.
When kings met kings, we’d cheer and wait,
For the next fierce clash to decide our fate.

Crazy Eights brought many twists and turns,
With sudden reversals and lessons learned.
A lucky eight could rescue the day,
And cause our troubles to fade away.

Slap Jack demanded a lightning hand,
The quickest reflexes in all the land.
A missed slap brought teasing galore,
As cards scattered across the floor.

We would ask a newcomer with a sly grin,
A question designed to draw them in:
“Wanna play Fifty-Two Card Pick-Up today?”
The unsuspecting victim always said, “Okay.”

The deck flew skyward in a colorful shower,
Scattering fifty-two cards like petals of a flower.
Then came the punchline we’d all cheerfully speak:
“Pick them all up.” That was the trick of the week.

No batteries were needed. No screens to refresh.
We had not charger of cords tangled in a mess.
Just playing cards and plenty of laughter to spare,
Provided a wonderful time for all who were there.

Today many children swipe, tap, and scroll,
While glowing devices capture the soul.
Yet simple card games still have much to impart—
Patience and fellowship, hand, mind, and heart.

A deck of old cards costs little to buy,
Yet opens adventures money can’t buy.
The enduring friendships they can make
Are treasures no gadget can ever replace.

So shuffle the deck and gather around.
Let cheerful conversation abound.
The old games could shine if kids would only see
All the fun that’s still waiting beyond technology.
