WELCOME

A sign said WELCOME in letters so tall,
But I scratched at my beard. Was that all?
So much empty space, such a wide-open chance,
For more words to invite someone to a dance.

Why not “How are you?” to say it’s you I adore?
Or “How can I help you?” would mean much more.
“Great to see you here,” could be said with a grin,
Or “Let’s hang out for a while. Won’t you come in?”

“There’s no better place at this moment to be.”
Now that is a phrase that feels friendly to me.
Or “What took you so long?” with a happy cheer,
Saying, “You have been missed. I’m glad you’re here.”

“Rain or shine, it’s a marvelous day.”
Now those words will brighten our way.
Just a few more words with your heart shining through,
Will turn empty greetings to words meaningful and true.

So don’t say, “Welcome!” and just leave it at that.
Add some encouraging delight and a tip of your hat.
For words that are richer, as lively as a song,
Make strangers feel like they already belong.
