Direction: Why Human Plans Often Fail

How can the message of a “false prophet” be of any danger to a Christian?

Many people believe success begins with a clear goal, a strong vision, and a carefully designed strategy. Business books, leadership seminars, and motivational speakers often repeat the same formula: Define your objective. Build a plan. Execute it relentlessly.Yet history is full of examples where brilliant plans collapsed. Companies invest millions in a strategy, only to file bankruptcy. Entrepreneurs pour years of effort into a venture that never succeeds. The problem is not necessarily that people lack planning ability. The problem is that human beings can’t see the future.

Human Planning

At the beginning of any plan, we assume the conditions will remain favorable. But markets change. Circumstances shift. Obstacles appear that no one anticipated. What seemed like a brilliant strategy may turn out to be a path to failure.If you think your plan is important, think again. You say, “Maybe today but tomorrow for sure we’ll go to the city and stay for a year, doing big business and making lots of money.” You don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Will you even be alive? Your life is as certain as the clouds, present now but maybe not tomorrow. — James 4:13–14Human foresight can never be as good as following God to fulfill his plan.

The One Who Knows the Future

If direction requires knowledge of the future, then the most reliable guidance must come from the One who already knows the future. The Bible repeatedly describes God as the One who sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10).God’s perspective isn’t limited by time. What is hidden from us is already visible to him. He sees the consequences of every choice, the obstacles ahead, and the opportunities we can’t yet imagine.This is why trusting human forecasters can only go so far. Experts may analyze trends and probabilities, but their predictions are still guesses about unknown conditions.God, however, does not have to guess.

One Step at a Time

If God knows the entire path, why doesn’t he reveal the whole plan to us at the beginning? The answer may be simpler than we expect: If we knew the whole journey, we might try to accomplish it ourselves. God often guides us step-by-step so we remain dependent on him.Your Word is a lamp to keep my feet from stumbling, a light that shines before me to show the way you want me to go. — Psalm 119:105Notice the imagery. A lamp does not illuminate the entire road for miles ahead. It simply reveals the next few steps. God’s guidance works in much the same way. We rarely see the full map. Instead, we are given enough light to take the next step.

The Faith of Abraham

Few biblical stories illustrate our need to trust God step-by-step better than the account of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22. God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the son through whom God had promised to create a great nation. From a human perspective, the instruction made no sense. If Isaac died, how could the promise be fulfilled?Yet Abraham obeyed. He reasoned that God could even raise the dead (Hebrews 11:19). But he didn’t know how God would resolve the situation. He simply trusted God enough to take the next step.
When Isaac asked where the sacrificial lamb was, Abraham said God would provide the lamb (Genesis 22:8). At that moment Abraham had no visible evidence of any “lamb” other than Isaac. But he trusted the character of God.And God did provide.

Taking the Next Step

Many people spend their lives searching for a grand vision of the future. They want to know exactly where they will be ten years from now before they take the next step forward. But the Bible emphasizes something far simpler: Take the next right step.It’s not complicated. God has shown what is right and what he requires, simply to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly in obedience to him. The Lord is calling. Will you be wise enough to listen to him? — Micah 6:8–9Notice the word walk. Walking happens one step at a time.Faith is not primarily about seeing the destination. It is about trusting the One who leads the journey.

God’s Direction

Sometimes people say, “I don’t know what God wants me to do.” In many cases, the problem is not that God is silent. The problem is that our lives are filled with so many competing voices. We hear advice from friends, experts, media personalities, and cultural trends. Every voice claims to know the best path forward.Jesus warned about following the wrong leaders. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch (Matthew 15:14). But we have the Holy Spirit to guide us (John 16:13).Learning to recognize God’s voice requires time in Scripture, prayer, and a willingness to surrender our own desires.

The Danger of Independence

One of the greatest spiritual dangers occurs when people believe they no longer need God’s guidance. Success can create the illusion of self-sufficiency. When things go well, we might think our wisdom and skill produced the results.David’s life provides a sobering example. Despite being called a man after God’s own heart, he fell into terrible sin when he followed his own desires with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11). Later, he realized that nothing is hidden from God (Psalm 139:1). His repentance in Psalm 51 reveals a deeper understanding of his dependence on God.

Endurance: Staying on the Path

Jesus emphasized endurance as an essential part of faith when he said, “Those who remain faithful until the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). This raises an important question: What does it mean to endure?Endurance does not simply mean living a clean, godly life while waiting our last days. Think about that. God has a purpose for our being on Earth, and that has to include doing his will. That’s accomplished by following his direction day-after-day.Faithfulness in small steps inevitably leads to the fulfillment of God’s eternal purpose.

Delight in the Lord

Perhaps the most powerful principle of spiritual direction is found in these Bible verses:Delight in the Lord, for he can give you the desires of your heart when you want what he wants. If any addiction or heart’s desire is not what you feel it should be, keep deepening your pleasure in the Lord and he will help you change. Your good deeds will shine like the noonday sun, and people will see that you are right. — Psalm 37:4–6When our greatest desire becomes pleasing God, his direction becomes clearer. Our focus shifts from pursuing our own ambitions to participating in his plan. And his plan is always greater than anything we could design ourselves.

Following God’s Direction

When we look back on our lives, we may be tempted to measure success by our accomplishments. But believers recognize something different: Whatever good has been accomplished was God-enabled, not self-enabled.We become willing instruments in his hands. The result is not personal glory but shared joy in what God has done.

The First Step

Many people search for direction because they feel lost. But the first step is not discovering the perfect plan. The first step is developing a relationship with the One who already knows the path.When we surrender our will to God and learn to walk with him daily, direction becomes clearer. And when we follow his voice—step-by-step—he leads us exactly where we need to go.
