Write Steps

The steps of righteous people are directed by the Lord, and they love to walk with him. They may stumble, but they won’t fall flat, because God will help them up. — Psalm 37:23–24 The Discussion Bible

I wanted to write, but the pathway looked steep,
So I sighed and I shuffled and started to weep.
“How do I know if the next step will be right?”
Then God softly whispered, “Just walk in my light.”

I stared at the blank page, so quiet, so wide,
With voices of doubt all yelling inside.
“Too boring. Too sloppy. Too long. Not enough.
I wrote only one line, and that line was tough.

I considered the future, the platform, the plan,
The agents, the book deals, the launch for my brand.
But God said, “My child, that’s not what I seek.
Just write from the heart, with one step each week.”

I can’t worry about chapters or contracts or fame.
So what, if my work never earns me a name?
I’ll write what is true and let love be my guide,
Trusting God’s Spirit to walk by my side.

My thoughts may go racing, all spinning around,
While worries and fears try to hold me down.
But one step in faith can quiet my storm.
The next write steps are how novels are born.

Compared to others, I feel I’m behind,
Although reading great works can stir the mind.
“I can ignore lofty goals, Lord, but the next steps are yours.
Your plans for my voice will unlock its own doors.”

Some days, dear writer, you may have an inspired pen,
But on other days, you’ll erase and rewrite it all again.
With each little stumble and every rewrite,
You’re walking by faith, not by earthly sight.

Pray when you start and pray when you pause.
Write not for celebrity, but for Heaven’s cause.
Don’t worry if readers are quiet or loud.
If God gives the words, then he’s already proud.

One sentence, one stanza, one story, one spark,
Might brighten a soul who was lost in the dark.
So keep taking the next steps in the way you should go.
You’re writing with God, and he’ll help your words flow.
