Working for the Lord

Include the Lord in everything you do, and he will direct your thoughts. Whatever you do for people, give your best effort to please the Lord, knowing that the greatest reward comes from serving him. — Proverbs 16:3; Colossians 3:23–24 The Discussion Bible

Some folks work for the cash and the pay.
They wait for the weekend and dream of the day.
Working for the boss or the bills they must meet,
They march through the hours with tired, dragging feet.

But there is a job that’s much better, by far—
No desk and no cubicle, no name on a car.
Work for the Lord, so he’s your Boss and Guide,
Walking with you daily, always by your side.

At first, you might think, “There is a great prize—
A treasure, a blessing, a seat in the skies.”
But working for God, you have something more—
A purpose, a presence, a joy at your core.

You don’t need a time-card or workroom with walls.
You can work in the kitchen, the streets, and the malls.
Your Boss sees every action, each motive you bear,
He sees your heart and knows what is there.

Some work for the weekend, or fame, or acclaim.
They chase after gold or a celebrity name.
But you can trade all the glitter and pride
For joy in the service of God as your guide.

When your schedule is full, with more to do than you can,
You need only to stop and ask for his heavenly plan.
He’ll show you what matters, what things you should do.
He will lead you with love and his mercies anew.

No stress is needed, so don’t carry the weight.
God bears the burden and governs your fate.
Just do what you can with a heart that’s sincere,
And leave all results to the One you revere.

The paycheck he gives isn’t always in gold.
His peace and provision are blessings untold.
He knows what you need, and he gives it with care—
A Father, a Shepherd, and a Friend always there.

When your job on Earth is at last through and done,
He’ll call you to work where there’s no setting sun.
There’s no end to the labor or eternal reward
In your higher assignment, still working for Lord.

If you become weary or tired of the grind,
If work is a burden and peace is hard to find,
Consider this offer—it’s more than a gig:
God’s hiring now, and his office is big.

No resume is needed, no suit and no tie.
Just give him your heart and a faith that will try.
His yoke, it is easy. His burden is light.
Working for him makes the soul feel just right.
