Oh, the things that go ding and things that go beep—
They tug on your brain when it’s trying to keep
A thought in one place—just one steady track—
But those little distractions set your focus back.
We tap our keyboards with a clickety-clack,
Then peek at the emails piled up in a stack.
We tell ourselves, “Just one quick look.”
Then, whoosh! Where was I going with my book?”
Our gadgets go gleaming with glittery lights.
They entice and interrupt us into the nights.
We stare at the glow with buzz that awakes,
Unaware of the time the interruption takes.
But peace and quiet are golden. Oh, such a treat,
Where thoughts can bloom like flowers so neat,
Where prayers whisper softly and settle in deep,
And your soul finds a calm that it’s longing to keep.
Distractions come sneaking like cats on the prowl,
They wiggle and whisper and yip-yip and yowl.
They pull us away from the things God would bless,
And leave our poor minds in a jumble-y mess.
Some call it “multitasking” as if it saves the day,
But the switching and swapping is really a delay.
Our thoughts wind up tangled until they drop
Like socks spinning in the dryer and won’t stop.
So close all the portals that beep, buzz, and ring,
And make the Lord’s calling your very best thing.
In more moments of focus and hours of grace—
You’ll find a new joy taking shape in that space.
For Jesus himself slipped away from the crowd,
No noise and no chaos, no clamoring so loud.
He whispered to Heaven in quiet retreat.
This time with the Father made his work complete.
So recognize distractions as sneaky time thieves,
As wind disturbing your branches and leaves.
Decide what is worthy, what earns your good sight,
And then follow that purpose with all your might.
For life becomes brighter—oh, wonderfully so—
When focus blooms bigger and peace starts to grow.
And suddenly your time, once lost in the air,
Becomes a rich treasure you’re able to spare.
