The Want-It Monster

Do not desire your neighbor’s house, his wife, or his servants. Do not wish you had his animals or anything he owns. — Exodus 20:17 The Discussion Bible

Coveting whispers, “Oh look. Can’t you see?
If you had what they have, how happy you’d be.”
It tickles your ears with a voice sly and sweet,
But leaves you still hungry for more to eat.

Ads show their houses, their cars, and their stuff,
You look at your lives thinking, “I don’t have enough.”
But hidden behind the pictures, many struggles will hide,
With worries and troubles piled as a mountain inside.

God said, “Don’t covet. Don’t chase what’s not yours.
I’ll show you a better way—the best of all doors.”
Like a child with a toy that looks shiny and new,
We forget that our Father has good gifts too.

For riches can trap us and leave us in need.
Like drinking salt water, it won’t quench our greed.
But trusting in God brings a joy that will stay,
Bringing peace in our hearts that won’t slip away.
