The Next Right Step

People want to map their entire journey, but God shows them only the next step. — Proverbs 16:9 The Discussion Bible

Don’t look at the mountain, the top or the steep.
Don’t panic or pause or forget how to leap.
Take the next step. Don’t worry over two or three.
Just walk where God points, and let yourself be.

We worry, we wander, we twist and we spin,
We fear what might happen if we don’t win.
But step number two can wait for a bit.
You’ll miss the whole journey if you just sit.

Some steps look good, but lead to a fall.
They sparkle and shine but don’t help at all.
Pause and surrender. Don’t rush to decide.
Let God shape each step as he walks by your side.

Some say, “Follow your gut feeling. Trust your brain.”
But what if our own wisdom is nothing to gain?
Like Gideon in weakness was chosen to fight,
Our strength isn’t ours but is found in God’s might.

We stumble and fumble. We practice and grow.
One step at a time, then onward we go.
Even when waves make us panic and doubt,
We reach for God’s hand and he pulls us out.

You may not see a map or the path up ahead,
But pray and you’ll find where your next step is led.
If Jesus sought silence to know his Father’s heart,
Then prayer is the place where our guidance should start.

It’s not just the doing. It’s who we become,
With hearts that are shaped like the heart of the Son.
He walked in obedience every step of the way,
And shows how we can take the right step each day.

So what’s the next step, the one right and true?
Not twenty or thirty. Just the one I should do.
A whisper, a phone call, a kind little deed—
God guides us one step to the place that we need.

So walk with your Savior, no need for disguise.
He sees every tear and the doubt in your eyes.
Each step you take with his Spirit alongside,
Will show you each step as your faithful guide.
