The Listener’s Lesson

Answering before listening is foolish and shameful. — Proverbs 18:13 The Discussion Bible

I used to jump in with all my thoughts on parade,
Before folks had finished the points that they made.
I’d answer so quickly, so proud and so fast,
That half of the meaning got lost in the blast.

My mouth was a rocket while my ears were asleep.
I’d talk past the Shepherd and startle the sheep.
I thought I was clever, all chatter and grin—
But wisdom can’t enter till silence comes in.

One day I was humbled as embarrassing words came,
When words that I blurted brought others to shame.
I realized that listening was more than being polite.
It was waiting with heart, not just ears that were tight.

Now I measure words like a poet with care,
Leaving ample space for the Spirit to share.
For speaking too soon is a fool’s greatest art,
But listening first is the song of the heart.

So before you rush in to advise or defend,
Remember—listeners make the best friends.
A wise conversation starts quiet and small.
In hearing God’s whispers, you’ll speak, after all.
