The King Who Became Poor

You know the generosity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He left his place of riches and glory and became poor, subject to the frailties of human flesh, so that through his poverty we might be made rich. — 2 Corinthians 8:9 The Discussion Bible

There once was a King of splendor like gold,
With mor riches and glories than can ever be told.
He lived in a palace with bright shining light,
Where nothing went wrong and all things were right.

On one special day that King revealed his plan
To help everyone on Earth, each woman and man.
Lost in their sinfulness, trembling and afraid,
They needed his love and the price that he paid.

He set down His crown, left His throne up on high,
And came to the world where the weary ones cry.
He traded His robe for some straw where he lay,
And slept in a stable of cold, scratchy hay.

He didn’t wear jewels, or ride on a steed.
He walked dusty roads and helped those in need.
He healed all the hurting, gave sight to the blind,
And taught them that love is both fierce and kind.

Though he was so rich, he became rather poor,
So we could be welcomed, forgiven, and more.
He gave up his all—his comfort and throne—
So we would never have to walk all alone.

Now if you ask why he came from above,
The answer is simple: He did it for love.
He gave what he had without fuss or fight—
To make us his heirs of his mercy and his light.

So remember this truth when you’re feeling unsure:
The King made you rich when he made himself poor.
And now we can live with a joy that won’t end—
Thanks to Jesus, our Savior, our treasure, our friend.
