Real Needs

Your Father knows what you need before you ask. If our fleshly needs control our desires, we walk away from God, toward death. But if we are sensitive to our spiritual needs and follow—as best we know how—what pleases God, we will live forever. — Matthew 6:8; Romans 8:13 The Discussion Bible

I thought I needed a truck and a boat,
A shiny gold watch, and a tailor-made coat.
But then I turned to listen and heard God say,
“That isn’t the kind of stuff you need today.”

I wanted a title and a much-loved name,
A life full of fortune and worldwide fame.
But wait! What if my wants aren’t what I need?
What if they sprouted from selfish seed?

God knows my heart and sees all my days,
He leads me with love in mysterious ways.
I think I need this, and I think I need that,
But God shakes his head and says, “Let’s chat.

“You want all the glitter, the buzz, and the flair,
But what you most need is found in more prayer.
Not riches or praise or a life without mess—
You need me to guide you and teach you to rest.”

Surrender is strange. It feels like a loss
But leads to great gain when we take up our cross.
When I finally let go of the great plans I once drew,
I found that God’s dreams were better—and true.

Obedience flows when we change how we see.
Satisfaction is found in who God wants me to be—
Not free to chase what the world thinks is best,
But free to walk in his peace and his rest.

Learning that my wants aren’t needs requires insight,
And such faith isn’t built in the blink of a light.
It grows as we wrestle through the pain,
And trust that no trial is ever in vain.

The fight in our flesh and the pull on the soul
Make surrender to God feel hard to control.
Paul said it clearly: “There’s war deep inside,
And God wants to win where our old ways still hide.”

So start with a prayer, a song, and God’s Word.
Let truth in your heart be planted and stirred.
Trust in God’s timing, for he’s never too slow.
He’ll give what you need to help your faith grow.

If you’re stuck on your lack, and you ache for much more,
You may miss the great gifts God’s placed at your door.
So stop and be still. Count the blessings you’ve got.
You’ll find that your needs are met on the spot.

True peace and true purpose, they come when we yield—
When our hands are wide open and no longer sealed.
Give up the striving, and trust what is true.
God knows what you need far better than you.
