Obedience

Does God take pleasure in sacrifices and burnt offerings as much as obeying his voice? Listen, obedience is better than sacrifice. To say yes is more important than offering the fat of sheep. — 1 Samuel 15:22 The Discussion Bible

Obedience showed up wearing soft velvet shoes,
While Sacrifice boomed with the sound of “Choose!”
“I’m louder,” Sacrifice said. “I sparkle and shout.”
But God said, “Better listening is what this is about.”

King Saul didn’t do what God said he should do.
For him, wanting to please people was nothing new.
Instead of destroying everything as he’d been told.
For Sacrifice, he saved the enemy sheep in the fold.

You can sing all the songs and you can light a big fire,
Build towers of offerings stacked higher and higher,
But if God says, “Go left,” and you proudly go right,
The altar isn’t the best fix for having bad sight.

God isn’t looking for smoke rising in the air,
Or gifts wrapped in logic and spiritual flair.
He wants our hearts to say, “Yes, Lord, I hear,”
And be obedient when the reason isn’t yet clear.

So walk when God says so. Stop when he says, “Stay.”
Don’t trade his command for having your own way.
For Sacrifice sparkles but isn’t a good choice.
Obedience is what’s needed for all to rejoice.
