Emotion pops up without knocking. Surprise!
It sneaks past our thoughts and opens our eyes.
It tells us what matters, what we hold tightly,
What shines in our joy or might ache nightly.
You think you love treasure? Watch when it’s gone.
Does your heart feel a tremble, or do you barely yawn?
What stings when it’s missing? What leaves barely a trace?
Emotion reveals what we really hold in our treasure space.
Logic can list every imagined pro and con.
It can ponder all day and keep pondering on.
But when the time comes to choose wrong or right,
Emotion steps in and adds weight to the fight.
Babies cry loudly, then laugh with a squeal,
No masks, no pretending—just what they feel.
Grown-ups say, “Be strong, don’t let feelings show.”
So our emotions get stuffed and buried far below.
But poke at the heart where the deep values lie,
And suddenly, even the strong man may cry.
A win or a loss, when it mattered so much,
Will break the calm with an uncontrollable rush.
Stuffing emotions can be risky, so beware.
Like steam in a kettle with nowhere for air,
The pressure keeps building until something goes, “Pop!”
And anger erupts where it should’ve been stopped.
If we fake who we are, we’ll feel not quite right,
Afraid to be honest in God’s revealing light.
But he already knows us—each tear, each flaw,
And loves us completely, despite all that he saw.
When pleasing the Lord is our main concern,
Our values grow clearer. Our hearts start to learn.
We treasure what matters and loosen our grip,
On things we once clutched on an emotional trip.
Emotion’s not evil. It’s not king on the throne,
It’s a messenger sent to guide us back home.
It’s not to rule us or fool us or make us pretend—
But it will point us to truth … and our Very Best Friend.
