Big Ears, Small Mouth

Therefore, fellow believers, listen carefully, speak cautiously, and don’t be controlled by your emotions, for anger will never lead to actions that please God. — James 1:19–20 The Discussion Bible

Oh listen up, friends. I’ve a secret to share,
A tip that can save you from many a snare.
Be quick to hear and slow to shout,
Especially when anger comes storming out.

For stomping and roaring and yelling won’t do.
That won’t bring you closer to God’s point of view.
When feelings get fiery and tempers run hot,
The right thing to do is stay cool on the spot.

Stop and take a breath. Don’t jump to defend.
Your words build a bridge, or they might just offend.
Think carefully first, then speak when it’s right,
For wisdom speaks softly, not loud in a fight.

The ears are for listening. The mouth takes its cue.
Your heart stays in charge when you think things through.
So fellow believers, remember how it must be:
A calm heart brings joy and keeps you worry-free.

And when you are tempted to snap or to stew,
Just ask what would God be delighted you do?
Pause for a moment and take time to be still.
Let your heart follow his way and his will.
