Each year that I walk with the Lord up above,
My steps feel more steady, my heart filled with love.
I marvel and wonder, “How could this be better?”
Yet somehow God tops it. Every year is better.
I’m proud of the progress, the joy, and the climb,
Although next year still must wait for its time.
That chapter’s unwritten, the deadline’s not done—
But isn’t that true of the best yet to come?
My classes grew sharper, my coaching more clear.
My edits were more polished than ever this year.
The stories I shaped and the writers I cheered
All stretched me and taught me as they appeared.
Perhaps I’m like the one who stood up to say,
“I’m better than yesterday, even better today.
I’m not where I’m going. I’m not all I will be.
But thank God I’m not who I once used to be.”
Keep writing relentlessly, my dear writing friend.
You’ll keep growing from year end unto year end.
Each draft gets you closer to all you will do—
For God shapes the story that’s forming in you.
You can celebrate your progress without worry or fear—
For writers who keep writing improve every year.
Just take the next step. Keep your pen on the page.
Your best work is coming. You’re already on the next stage.
