Overcome Discouragement: Find the Perfect Way to Be Encouraged

Inspiring

How can we avoid discouragement?
Discouragement is a powerful force that can sap our energy, steal our joy, and make us question whether God has a purpose for our lives. For someone who already is discouraged, the advice “Don’t be discouraged” comes too late—unless we can find a good reason to be encouraged.
Recognizing Discouragement’s Source
Discouragement typically comes from unmet expectations, repeated failures, or prolonged struggles. The hope we once had is now lost. The threat of being laid off or fired, a marriage on the rocks, or children who can’t seem to stay out of trouble can lead to depression and anxiety, but the cause isn’t those things. Actually, we become discouraged when we feel powerless to change the situation. Look at it this way: If you were in control, you’d do something about it and wouldn’t have a reason to be discouraged, would you?
Satan, the enemy of our souls, would love to see your faith weakened, unable to find the antidote and giving up on God.
Elijah’s Death Wish
Even great men and women of God have faced discouragement. After his miraculous demonstration of God’s power at Mount Carmel, Elijah fled in fear when Queen Jezebel threatened his life. He became so discouraged that he asked God to take his life, which is amazing, isn’t it? If he hadn’t fled, Jezebel would have quickly taken care of that. Apparently, he didn’t really want to die, but without hope, what was left of life? Perhaps you have felt that way before. I have.
Instead of condemning Elijah, God provided food and a renewed purpose, but that wasn’t what overcame his discouragement. What was it? After hearing God’s voice, he gave up his desire to be in control. He knew something even more important: God was in control.
Holding On to God’s Promises
When discouragement threatens to take hold, we must remind ourselves of God’s promises and know he has the power to cause all these things to work together for good if we don’t give up. As long as we continue to love him and work to fulfill his purpose, we can be thankful for his control that will cause everything to be all right.
Practical Steps to Overcome Discouragement
  • Stay in God’s Word: Scripture renews our minds and reminds us of God’s faithfulness.
  • Pray Consistently: Prayer is a lifeline that connects our spirit to God’s Spirit and gives us strength.
  • Surround Yourself with Encouraging People: Isolation often deepens discouragement. Find people who will support you in remembering and believing God’s truths.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Instead of focusing on what hasn’t happened yet, celebrate progress, no matter how small.
  • Keep Moving Forward: Even when you don’t feel like it, keep taking steps in faith.
The Promise of Reward
God is the miracle worker in control, who is responsible for results. You don’t have to worry about the outcome. Reassure yourself that nothing you do for him is ever wasted. You need only be concerned about your effort. As you press on, your faith will be strengthened, and you’ll feel closer to him.
When discouragement tries to settle in … remember that God sees your struggle. He will honor your perseverance, and he will reward your faithfulness in due time.
