Heaven Opened: The Holy Spirit Descending as a Dove

Inspiring
What was the significance of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus like a dove?
As Jesus came up out of the water, the sky opened, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove, lighting upon him. A voice spoke from above: “You are my son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you.” — Matthew 3:16–17 The Discussion Bible

God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and led the Israelites in a pillar of cloud and fire. In his appearance on Mount Sinai, the people saw smoke and lightning, heard the thunder, and felt the earth quake. But other than Jesus’ baptism, nowhere in Scripture do we see a manifestation of God’s presence in the visible form of a dove.
A Sign for John the Baptizer
John said he was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, baptizing people, and preparing people’s hearts for the coming Messiah. When Jesus came to be baptized, John objected, saying it should be the other way around—that Jesus should be the one to come and baptize him (Matthew 3:14). Why did he say that? As relatives, Jesus and John growing up must have spent significant time together. While John was mischievous at times, Jesus wasn’t inclined that way. I’m thinking John saw Jesus as more righteous. What do you think?
What we know from Scripture is that John didn’t recognize Jesus as Messiah until after he was baptized. When the Spirit descended upon him as a dove and God spoke from above, saying, “You are my son, whom I love. I am well pleased with you,” John knew. Later, John told his disciples that he knew because God had said he would see the Holy Spirit descend upon the Messiah as a dove (John 1:32–34).
The Unusual Personality of a Dove
Many bird species will aggressively defend their nests, including mockingbirds, bluejays, and geese. Like the hummingbird, pigeon, and wren, doves will leave their nests rather than confront predators. When Jesus told his disciples to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves,” he was telling them to slip into the city without fanfare and leave when they faced opposition (Matthew 10:16).
The Holy Spirit did not descend with a display of God’s power in thunder and lightning. No, but fell upon Jesus as a dove, signifying a ministry of love and divine guidance for those who would recognize and accept him. He came with humility, grace, and self-sacrifice, not with physical or political power.
The Anointing of Jesus for Ministry
Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed in appointment and empowerment for serving the Lord. When young David was anointed, the Spirit of the Lord was with him (1 Samuel 16:13). Unlike other leaders, Jesus was anointed from above, chosen and empowered by God himself.
The voice from above affirmed Jesus’ identity as Son of God although Jesus habitually referred to himself as the Son of Man, which emphasized his humanity to most people, not his divinity.
What This Means for Us
The same Holy Spirit who descended upon Jesus is available to us today. John the baptizer told his disciples that the Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit (John 1:33). Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us. While God’s Spirit might not flood over us with wind and fire like on the Day of Pentecost, he is always present to speak to our hearts, guiding us if we’re inclined to listen.

When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own authority but will say only what he hears. He will reveal to you things to come. — John 16:13 The Discussion Bible
