Lamps, Not Maps

Your Word is a lamp to keep my feet from stumbling, a light that shines before me to show the way you want me to go. — Psalm 119:105 The Discussion Bible

We ask for a map with the whole road in sight,
Each turn marked in ink and the timing just right.
But God gives a lamp—not a floodlight to see,
Just light for the next step where we should be.

We squint ahead for a picture so grand—
A castle, a crown, or a five-year-long plan.
But God says, “Child, you don’t need that view.
Just trust me today. Do all you know to do.”

Some folks make a vision from wishes and whim,
Then stamp it “divine,” though it started with them.
It sparkles at first, then collapses in storms and rain,
For God fights his battles, not ours dressed as gain.

We say that we long to see clearly and true,
But is there something we won’t let him undo?
A comfort we cling to, a plan we defend,
That fogs the vision we’re asking him to send?

A mind split in halves can’t decide where to go.
It sways like a tide with no steady-held flow.
But God’s vision brings focus. It quiets the noise
And points us ahead with conviction and poise.

For “all things are possible”—yes, that is true,
But not every mountain is meant for you.
God chooses the hill where his strength will be shown,
So the glory is his—not the praise you would own.

We might shout, “I can do it,” with courage so tall,
But God says, “With me, you can do all that I call.”
Self-trust soon runs empty. God’s strength won’t fade.
He finishes visions when we want what he’s made.

So don’t wait for clarity wide as the sky,
Or thunder-loud voices that come rolling by.
Just take the next step—the faithful, right one,
And vision will grow as the walking gets done.
