Stepping Out

Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. When he felt the strong wind and saw the high waves, he was frightened and began to sink. “Sir, save me!” — Matthew 14:29–30 The Discussion Bible

When a thought seems to come from above,
We may wonder if it’s time to push or to shove.
But the question that matters is simple and true:
Did God whisper this? Or did fear tell you to?

Some impulses push us to rush and to run,
To chase after shadows and call it good fun.
But others are like candles lighting our heart—
A spark of God’s leading, a heavenly start.

We plan and we ponder. We worry and wait.
We mark our calendars and decide every date.
But sometimes our thinking is simply a wall
That prevents our hearing God’s soft, gentle call.

Poor Peter, they say, was impulsive at best,
Going without thinking, different from the rest.
Yet of all the disciples who stayed in the boat,
He was the one who began walking afloat.

“Come out on the water,” the Master had said.
So Peter stepped out with no plan in his head.
He walked where no logic said anyone could—
For faith does what reason says nobody should.

But oh how the waves made a world of despair.
He looked at the storm instead of God’s care.
And yet, when he sank, Jesus held out his hand—
For grace pulls us up when we cannot stand.

Sometimes you should step when you can’t see the end.
You trust your Savior, your Guide and your Friend.
You don’t need a blueprint for all you must do—
Just the next right step that he whispers to you.

If you wait for perfection, you’ll wait all life long.
Fearing every failure, you’ll never grow strong.
But faith that is living, alive, warm, and bright—
Lets you follow in his footsteps, day and night.

So take one small step when he tells you to go.
Don’t worry or wonder how everything’s so.
For the hand that made oceans and holds every star
Will safely guide your steps, both near or far.
