Training for Reigning

Athletes give their lives in strenuous training for a short-lived glory, but we strive for a reward that will last forever. — 1 Corinthians 9:25 The Discussion Bible

There’s a runner inside you, a jumper, a sprinter,
Training you in the spring, fall, summer and winter—
Not running for ribbons or medals or fame,
But growing in goodness is really the game.

Your muscles will tingle. Your feelings might squeak.
You’ll wobble and topple. You might fall this week.
But each time you stumble, God helps you to stand.
He’ll say, “Keep on training. You’re safe in my hands.”

When life feels all sore, and your patience feels thin,
That’s when the real strength will build deep within—
Like lifting up kindness when anger feels strong,
Or choosing to trust when the wait feels too long.

The pain isn’t pleasant. Yes, it will buzz and bite,
But pain can be helpful. It teaches what is right.
It says, “Slow down,” “Say you’re sorry,” or “Pray.”
It increases your knowledge and wisdom each day.

When guilt makes you frown, or your heart feels afraid,
Just talk to the Lord. You never should hide or evade.
When you say, “I’m sorry,” his love rushes through,
And suddenly great joy begins to sparkle in you.

Each prayer is a stretch, and each Bible verse a run.
Each time you choose to do right is a race being won.
The Spirit’s your trainer, your guide, and your friend.
He’ll coach you and help you from beginning to end.

So train every morning, at midday, and at night.
Keep running with Jesus. Everything will be all right.
When your race is finished, you’ll see his smiling face.
“Well done,” he will say. “You’ve faithfully finished my race.”
