More than Wrapping Paper

You’ll be thrilled when you see them coming. Treasures from across the ocean and the wealth of nations will come to you. Caravans of camels will arrive from Midian, Ephah, and Sheba bringing gold and spices, offering praises to the Lord. — Isaiah 60:5–6 The Discussion Bible

Some shout, “It’s party time. Lights up. More cheer.”
They dislike nativity scenes that bring Jesus near.
“Don’t box us with babies or truths from above—
We’ll jingle our freedom and call that love.”

Some merely enjoy carols, knowing songs by name,
But their faith is a form with not much of a flame.
They nod at the story, saying, “Yes, that’s so nice,”
But they don’t walk with Jesus or heed his advice.

Some wait with stockings stretched wide as can be,
For bonuses, blessings, and gifts beneath the tree.
“What will I get?” is all the sparkle they can see—
A Christmas of me, me, and more me times three.

They grow a bit taller and learn how to trade:
“I’ll give you a gift so now you’ve been paid.”
It’s a smile, a swap, a polite little spin,
A giving-to-get that still circles back in.

But oh, there are hearts that have learned a new way.
They wake up with joy at the chance to give away—
No tally, no tracking, no score to be won,
For giving itself is the sweetest of fun.

For God gave his Gift—so amazing yet true—
Not wrapped up in ribbon, but living in you.
With Christ in us, what we have is what we can give—
His love through our lives, every day that we live.
