I once was a mess, all tangled and torn,
Like sneakers all muddy or socks that were worn.
But then something happened, so wondrous and bright.
I met up with Jesus and stepped into the light.
The old me went walking, right out the back door,
No more stuck in the habits I followed before.
No grumbling or growling, no fussing or fight—
I’m brand-new in spirit and filled with his light.
The grump in my heart got a heavenly shove,
Replaced by a song and a whole lot of love.
I no longer stumble in gloom or despair,
God’s Spirit now guides me with tender, sweet care.
I’m no longer bound to the ways of the past,
The chains that once held me—they’re broken at last.
The old me is gone, like fog lifting in the sun.
A new life in Jesus has only just begun.
So if you feel stuck and don’t know what’s true,
Just call out to Jesus. He’s waiting for you.
You’ll rise up with joy, put the devil on the run,
For the old life is over, and a new life’s begun.
