Heart Attack

I will replace your hard, self-centered heart with a soft, giving heart. I will give you a new spirit unlike what you had before, for I will put my own Spirit within you, causing you to walk in my ways, knowing what is right and doing it. — Ezekiel 36:26–27 The Discussion Bible

I once had a heart that was stubborn and proud,
It grumbled and mumbled and boasted out loud.
Pouting and shouting, it threw quite a show—
Then shattered to pieces on the wrong way to go.

But God in his mercy said, “You need something new.
That heart’s made of stone. It won’t carry you through.
I’ll give you a heart that is tender and kind,
A heart that is caring, a heart that’s like mine.”

He reached in so gently and gave me a start—
A soft, giving, joyful, obedient heart.
He breathed in his Spirit, like wind through a tree,
And suddenly everything changed inside of me.

Now I walk in his ways, not just because I should—
But because deep inside, it feels right and so good.
I know what is right, and I want to obey.
His Spirit inside now leads me every day.

So if your heart’s heavy, all crusty and cold,
Don’t worry. God’s promises never grow old.
He’ll trade it for one that is living and new—
And fill it with power to help you stay true.
