Guard Your Heart

More than anything, guard the desire of your heart, which governs everything you do. A person with no self-control is like a city with smashed gates and broken-down walls. — Proverbs 4:23; 25:28 The Discussion Bible

More than your toys or your shiny red bike,
More than your sneakers or things that you like—
Guard your heart, my child. Protect it with care,
For it shapes how you act and the love that you share.

Your heart is the boss of the thoughts in your head.
It guides all your steps and the path that you tread.
But if you lose hold and just do what you please,
You’ll crash like a city brought down to its knees.

A person who rages or follows each whim,
Is like broken-down walls that are sadly grim.
With nothing to stop the threat and the pain,
The tempest races through like a runaway train.

So hold tight your thoughts and the seeds that you sow.
Be wise with your choices and steady your flow.
Your heart is a treasure, so guard it with might.
It leads you through darkness into the light.
