Friends of God

While we were God’s enemies, we were welcomed as if we were his friends, given life through the death of his Son. — Romans 5:9 The Discussion Bible

Once far from the Lord, in a dark land so grim,
We had no home where we could be with him.
We grumbled and fumbled. We strayed and we fell,
Unaware of the love that could make us all well.

But God, full of mercy, had a flawless design:
To send his own Son, both human and divine.
“Though they resist me, so stiff-necked and proud,
I’ll welcome them home when their hearts cry aloud.”

Then Jesus our Savior came down from above,
To die in our place and show his great love.
We traded our shame for his gift from the cross.
He paid the whole price. We took none of the loss.

Now we’re friends with our Maker. Through grace we belong,
Although we’re not perfect, and we’re not always strong.
By trusting the One who has made wrong things right,
We’re seeing death turned to life and our darkness into light.

Let’s dance in the truth. Let rejoicing begin.
Though once we were out, we are now back in.
No longer in shame, no longer alone,
We’re welcomed with joy as one of his own.
