The Tomorrow Trap

If you think your plan is important, think again. You say, “Maybe today but tomorrow for sure we’ll go to the city and stay for a year, doing big business and making lots of money.” You don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Will you even be alive? Your life is as certain as the clouds, present now but maybe not tomorrow. Therefore, what you ought to say is this: “Whatever the Lord wants—that’s what I live to do each day.” — James 4:13–15 The Discussion Bible

Oh, you’ve got big plans. You’ve mapped it all out.
“You bet we’ll succeed,” you boldly will shout.
“Today we will travel. Tomorrow we’ll stay.
We’ll make lots of money. We’ll win every day.”

But wait just a minute. Don’t move quite so fast.
Do you really know how long life will last?
You puff like the clouds in the sky up so high—
Here for a moment, then gone with a sigh.

You say what you will. You say what you might.
But do you remember who’s steering your flight?
You don’t know tomorrow. You don’t hold the key.
Only the Lord knows what’s meant to be.

You should say it like this to get it just right:
“I’ll follow the Lord, be it morning or night.
Whatever he wants, that’s what I will do.
Today or tomorrow, I’ll leave that to you.”

So dream and make plans, but don’t take the wheel.
Let God guide your journey; his way is the real deal.
Hold your plans loosely. Let trust lead the way.
Since he knows tomorrow, just follow today.
