The Truth About Acceptance: Our Right or Wrong Choices

Inspiring
What does it mean to call “heaven and earth” as witnesses? How can we better understand that God is our life, and without him, we are dead?
I call heaven and earth to witness your choice today, whether for life or death, to be blessed or cursed. Choose life so you and your descendants may live. Choose life by loving the Lord your God, hearing his voice, and doing what he wants without reservation. — Deuteronomy 30:19–20 The Discussion Bible
We live in a world where people often accept what they shouldn’t and reject what they should. Why does this happen? When our desires are misaligned with truth, we naturally lean into what feels good or familiar, not necessarily what is right. Just like Eve in the garden or Lucifer before his fall, we may chase independence rather than surrender, believing the lie because it’s what we want to believe.
Can We Really Accept What We Cannot Change?
There’s a popular saying: “Accept the things you cannot change.” It sounds wise—until we realize how often God works miracles in the very areas we assumed were unchangeable. What if the real issue isn’t about our inability, but our need for control? We hold on tightly because we’re afraid God won’t deliver what we want, in the way we want it, and when we want it.
Real growth begins when we believe that God’s way is better—even when we don’t understand it yet.
The Trap of Unquestioned Doctrine
One of the most subtle dangers is the unchallenged acceptance of doctrine simply because it fits our current belief system. Lies become powerful when they’re never questioned. When people are taught not to examine or wrestle with their beliefs, they may unknowingly accept error as truth. This is why spiritual growth requires humility, curiosity, and a deep desire to let the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth, not just the parts that feel safe.
Acceptance Is a Choice
Many people say, “I had no choice,” but what they really mean is, “I didn’t see another choice that was better.” Often, that’s a perspective issue. Even under pressure, we still have choice if we’re willing to accept the consequences. Even in fear, we can still choose to trust. Recognizing that there is another way, especially God’s way, requires clarity and courage.
Acceptance, then, is not passive. It’s an intentional decision to trust what we cannot fully see but surrender to the One who does.
The Iceberg of Truth
Like an iceberg, the truth is often mostly hidden. What we see on the surface is only a small part of the reality. The Holy Spirit acts as our divine guide, uncovering what we’d otherwise miss—if we’re willing to see it. But that willingness is key. God doesn’t force us to accept truth. He invites. He tugs. He reveals. But the decision to receive what he shows us is still ours.
Valuing Our Way Above God’s Way
Even when the truth is clear, people may reject it. Why? Because they still value their own way more. Transformation only comes when we realize that God’s truth is not just true—it’s better. Better than our best plans. Better than our strongest arguments. Better than our most convincing justifications. The struggle isn’t just about knowledge. It’s about trust.
Acceptance as Surrender
At its core, acceptance is not about giving up. It’s about giving over. It’s a matter of the heart: willingness, perception, and surrender. We are not called to passively accept our circumstances but to actively trust God’s leadership. That kind of acceptance is what truly changes us—rooted in truth, guided by the Holy Spirit, and surrendered in love.
God’s Way or the My Way
I once thought acceptance meant settling down,
Just nodding along with a shrug and a frown.
But truth has a way of tugging the heart—
A whisper from Heaven that pulls us apart.
We want what we want, and we think we know best.
We cling to our plans and ignore all the rest.
But God’s way is wiser, though hidden from view,
Like treasure that’s buried, awaiting what’s true.
Control is a trap that we often admire,
But it burns in our hands like a lively little fire.
We grasp and we grip with a fearful insistence,
When freedom is found in a holy resistance.
Some things we accept without ever a thought,
Because they align with the lies we were taught.
But truth isn’t shaken, and truth doesn’t bend.
It waits till we’re willing to see and to mend.
The Holy Spirit is gentle, yet firm in his pace,
Revealing what’s real with astonishing grace.
He shows us the depths of what we should know,
Like the part of the iceberg that’s hidden below.
Acceptance, dear friend, is a choice that we make,
To trust in the truth for our eternal future’s sake.
Not blind, not afraid, and not based on demand—
We do well to put our lives in God’s capable hands.
The path we accept is eternal reward gained or lost,
A crown made of light, or a dark abyss at very great cost.
One direction ends in glory, the other in pain—
So choose what is lasting, not fleeting and vain.
