When Life Surprises Us: Finding God in the Unexpected

Inspiring
Why might the world’s success formula to “plan your work and work your plan” be flawed?
If you think your plan is important, think again. You say, “Maybe today but tomorrow for sure we’ll go to the city and stay for a year, doing big business and making lots of money.” You don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Will you even be alive? Your life is as certain as the clouds, present now but maybe not tomorrow. Therefore, what you ought to say is this: “Whatever the Lord wants—that’s what I live to do each day.” James 4:13–15 The Discussion Bible
Life has a way of surprising us—sometimes in ways that shake us to our core. Despite all our planning, preparing, and insuring against potential disasters, we can never fully be ready for all that life can throw our way. How can we deal with the unexpected?
The Illusion of Preparation
Many of us try to safeguard our futures by saving money, buying insurance, or mentally rehearsing what we would do in a crisis. While these steps might help, they ultimately offer limited protection. Tragedies can strike without warning, far beyond anything we could have reasonably anticipated. With all our preparation and planning, saving for a rainy day, we can still be devastated when something truly unexpected happens.
The Only True Security
The only “insurance” that never fails is found in God, who who offers eternal life and a security that transcends this world. But this “policy” comes at a cost—not in dollars, but in total surrender to his will. Surrender sounds simple in theory, but in the moment of crisis, trusting God completely can feel incredibly difficult. We often battle the emotional turmoil of fear, doubt, and anxiety, even when our minds know God is in control.
The Battle Between Logic and Emotion
We may logically understand that God is sovereign, but our emotions don’t always follow suit. The process of surrendering to God’s will isn’t just a mental exercise. It reaches deep into the heart and touches the parts of us that resist change. It’s here, in the tension between what we know and what we feel, that the real battle takes place.
Nothing Surprises God
One comforting truth is this: nothing surprises God. He exists outside of time, fully aware of every event before it happens. While life catches us off guard, nothing catches him unprepared. James 4 reminds us that our plans for tomorrow are fragile and uncertain. When our plans fail, it isn’t because life is out of control. It’s often because we were trusting our own roadmaps instead of leaning on his guidance.
Simple Truth, Hard Practice
The solution is deceptively simple: trust God. I’ve heard that so many times, I’ve lost count, but in the face of tragedy, there’s no time to prepare, and trusting God isn’t always easy. Finding peace is not just about avoiding trouble or hoping for smooth paths. It’s about growing into a faith that is unshaken when the road gets rough.
When life surprises us and we feel unsettled, it’s often a sign that we haven’t fully surrendered. Yet even in those moments, God patiently invites us to lean on him, to release our burdens, and to trust that he is enough.
Obedience Without Full Understanding
We don’t need full understanding to walk in obedience. Faith steps in where answers are missing. We may never understand why certain things happen or how God’s plan is unfolding, but we are called to trust and obey anyway. So that’s what I must do.
Walking the Journey Together
The journey of trusting God when facing the unexpected is not a one-time decision. I think it’s a lifelong process. We won’t always get it right. We’ll struggle. We’ll question. But God is patient, and he walks with us.
If you find yourself still wrestling with how to handle the surprises life brings, you’re not alone. I’m right there with you. Let’s keep asking the hard questions, leaning into God’s guidance, and trusting that he can carry what we cannot carry.
Oops! There Goes My Plan
I once had a plan, oh, a very fine plan,
With steps and charts that said I surely can.
I mapped out my travels, my business, my day.
I thought I had it right, anticipated all the way.
But life has a habit and you might know it’s true.
It can throw curveballs coming straight toward you.
It zips and it zaps and it flips you around,
And all of your planning comes crashing down.
You plan your work. You work your plan.
That’s supposed to spell success for a man.
But oh, surprise! How the best plans can fall,
Because we’re not in charge of life, after all.
James wrote an observation that was quite grand:
“You don’t know tomorrow. It’s not in your hand.
You puff like a cloud, here now and then gone.
It’s God’s will that counts as life marches on.”
So what can we do when life spins us about?
When storms howl and we’re swallowed in doubt?
Do we panic? Do we freeze?
Do we buckle at the knees?
Some save for the rain. Some insure every door.
They prep and they stockpile and then prep some more.
But the truth that will stand when our best plans collapse
Is that God holds tomorrow. He’s got the right maps.
The one true security—oh, hear this, my friend—
Is trusting in God from beginning to end.
Not trusting in savings or carefully made charts,
But giving our lives and surrendering hearts.
Yet that’s not so easy, I’ll tell you quite plain.
Our hearts can hold tight to the fear and the pain.
We know with our heads that God’s in control,
But our feelings don’t always align with that goal.
Our logic says, “Trust,” but emotions say, “No.”
That’s the tension we face as we journey and grow.
But God’s never shocked. He’s not caught unaware.
He sees all the twists long before we get there.
The secret is simple. It’s trust, pure and sweet.
But oh, it’s much harder when life brings the heat.
When troubles come crashing like waves on the shore,
It’s hard to remember what our faith was for.
Still, God gently whispers, “Come walk here with me.
You don’t have to carry what I’ll carry for free.”
We won’t understand every turn on this track,
But we can keep walking ’cause he’s got our back.
Obedience walks when the answers are thin.
It’s faith that keeps stepping when doubts try to win.
So here’s where we land, and here’s what is true:
I’m still on this journey. Now how about you?
We’ll stumble. We’ll wrestle. We’ll sigh and we’ll cry.
But together with God, we’ll keep reaching the sky.
When life brings surprises, don’t panic, don’t flee.
Just trust that God’s caring for both you and me.
